Program Information

Gredos ibex (Capra pyrenaica Victoriae) is the biggest of the 4th subspecies of Spanish ibex. Is the most appreciated and exclusive ibex of Spain, located in a mountainous range between   Salamanca, Avila, Caceres and Madrid. Depending of the area, you can see herds of 40/50 big males, with more than 10 gold medal trophies in between. Horns are high and wrinkled, in the peculiar “lyre” form, the most representative characteristic of the Gredos Ibex.

Hunting is carried out in private hunting areas bordering the National Park, or inside of the Gredos National Game Reserve, the highest density game area. You´ll be guided by Gredos Reserve gamekeepers and the  support of one guide from Pyrenean Outfitters. Hunting is due by stalking, in a soft mountainous terrain with altitudes up to 2000 mts. The area is accessible by road and  in some places we can use  4×4 vehicles to spot the animals. We  have hunting areas adapted for all physical conditions. Some of our territories are a perfect for bowhunters.

We can offer from representative trophies to the best trophy class ibexes from Gredos mountains.  Gredos is located at 2 hours-drive from Madrid International Airport. It´s a perfect trip for a tourism combo, sightseeing tours, wine tasting and discovering Spanish cuisine.

Gredos is part of the Spanish ibex Grand Slam and the Capra Grand Slam and one of the 9 different mountain species of Spain, don´t hesitate to ask us for combined programs with Ronda, Sierra Nevada and Beceite ibex, Pyrenean and Cantabrian chamois, barbary sheep, mouflon and Balearian goat.

Hunting season

From 1 October to 30 May. There best seasons are two:  December, during the rut time. The old males run around the herds of females and it´s the moment where we can find this old and cautious billy who remains hided the whole year. The other season is March and April, when the males are in herds of 10-20 animals and come down in the fields to feed the first sprouts of tender spring grass.

Location

Gredos Mountains, depending of the licenses availability, we can hunt in Caceres or Ávila provinces. Hunting area is located at two hours-drive from Madrid international airport.

Trip plan

Day 1: Meeting and greetings in Madrid airport, transfer to the lodge and rest.

Day 2: Rifle testing, and hunting ibex.

Day 3: Hunting ibex

Day 4: Hunting ibex if necessary or sightseeing. Transfer to the airport or another hunting area in case of combo with other species.

In our hunting areas the population and quality of the ibex are really high. Usually, in one or two days the hunting is done, so this schedule may change. We can offer alternative activities for hunters and observers once the ibex is harvested.

Lodging

Usually the hunters are lodged in comfortable mountain hotels, agritourism houses, and in some places we have also the option to sleep in a stone and wood cabin, in the middle of the ibex herds.  In Spain the cuisine is part of our culture, you will discover during your trip the Spanish gastronomy and some of  the most famous dishes and wines of our country.

Guns and ammunition

Light rifles in  6,5 and 7 mm calibers are the most adapted for this hunting: 6,5 Creedmoor, 270 Win and WSM, 7 mmRM, 300 Win Mag, Weatherby and WSM… with bullets from 130 to 180 grains.
